How can I prepare my infant or toddler to be a successful reader when they are older?
- Talk and sing to your child from birth. Play peek-a-boo and pat-a-cake. Recite nursey rhymes. Sing lullabies.
- Let your baby know that you hear her babbles, coos, and gurgles, by smiling in response and repeating the sounds she makes.
- Play simple touching and talking games. Point to objects and name them.
- When he begins to speak, build his language. Use complete sentences in response to his single words.
- Encourage your child to talk with you. Ask questions that require her to talk in sentences and listen carefully.
- Read to your child often. Make it fun and comfortable to read together. Read with expression!
- Talk about what you are reading. Point to pictures and talk about them.
- Give your child sturdy books to look at, touch, hold. Make them easy for him to reach.
- Read favorite books again and again.
