What are some signs that an after-school program focuses on improving reading and learning?
After-school programs that focus on improving academic achievement are strongly connected to the school curriculum content. Activities may be voluntary and more informal, classes may be smaller, and there may be more active student participation. However, they should enrich, enhance, and extend the learning that takes place during the school day.
Here are some questions to help you see signs of a focus on improving learning, including reading:
- Are activities based on a) needs revealed by school assessments? b) curriculum guidelines? c) state standards? d) teacher feedback?
- Do teachers regularly share the specific needs of students (such as reading skills that should be learned more completely) with after-school staff?
- Do field trips, student performances, workshops, etc. build upon school curriculum content?
- Are reading skills, communications skills, and higher-order thinking skills embedded throughout after-school activities?
